The last gift in our 10 Gifts Giveaway is one that I hope will inspire language learners. It is great to see more resources now for learning Tagalog/Filipino, but there are over 170 languages spoken in the Philippines, so there is so much more work to be done!
That’s why I love this organization, LAING Hawaii (Language Acquisition and Immersion for the New Generation). They are a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of the cultural, linguistic, artistic, and literary heritages of the immigrant communities of Hawai’i. They offer free on-site classes in Ilokano and Cebuano!
It’s so wonderful to see the connection people make to their culture when they learn a language. There’s something so fascinating about words that can’t be fully translated into English, words that have deep cultural meaning.
